An air compressor is a type of device used to convert compressed or pressurised air into power by using a motor which may be diesel, petrol or electric. To fill the air compressor, more and more air is forced into the storage tank to increase the pressure – when the pressure reaches its limit, the air compressor shuts off and is contained within the tank, ready for use.

Air compressors are used to power a number of tools used on the construction site, such as jackhammers, as well as a range of other applications, industrial processes and to fill tyres.

To ensure your air compressor remains in tip-top shape, maintenance is essential. Taking preventative measures is usually more economical in the long run than buying a new air compressor altogether.

Useful Maintenance Techniques
Follow the Manufacturer’s Guidelines
It is a good idea to ensure that all operators are familiar with the manufacturer’s guidelines and given sufficient training on how to use an air compressor. The manufacturer’s guidelines contain important information regarding the limitations of the air compressor and correct usage, ensuring that it is used safely – this will help to prevent any accidents involving the operator and to protect the equipment itself.
Clean the Filters
If the air intake filter is not kept clean or replaced in a timely manner, this will force the air compressor to work harder and to lose power during the compression. This is especially important when working in a dusty environment.
Heat Exchangers
The heat exchanger is used to reduce the operating temperature of the air compressor, it also helps to remove the heat in the compressed air and condense any water vapour out of the air. The heat exchanger should be kept clean in order for the air compressor to function at optimum condition.
Regular Oil Changes
The oil should be changed on a regular basis, this will involve draining all the old oil and replacing it with new oil.
Fastenings
Whilst in use, the air compressor vibrates and is subject to wear and tear. All bolts, fastenings and hoses should be checked on a regular basis to ensure they are securely held in place.
Drain Excess Moisture
Condensation will accumulate in the tank from the air being compressed – the amount of moisture will increase in a more humid environment. A greater amount of condensation in the storage tank means that the available storage capacity will be reduced. A zero-loss automatic drain system can be fitted to drain condensate and improve efficiency.
General Service
A periodic service plan will help to ensure that the air compressor is running at its optimum level and help to prevent any disruptive breakdowns and subsequent downtime. A timetable is a good way to ensure that periodic checks and replacements to the air filter, oil separator, oil, belts and drive coupling, are all routinely carried out.
