What are the Differences Between Diesel And Petrol Engines?

Diesel itself offers more power per unit of fuel than its petrol counterpart and has a lower volatility, making it much safer to use.

Both diesel and petrol engines are reciprocal types of engines – they are driven by laterally moving pistons and work on the principal of internal combustion, where burning a mixture of air/fuel within the cylinders, creates mechanical energy via a series of explosions.

How Does a Diesel Engine Work?

For a diesel engine to function, the intake valve opens which allows air to enter, then the piston goes down. The piston then goes up and the air is compressed and is heated to extremely high temperatures. Then fuel is injected, ignition occurs, and one piston goes down. Finally, the piston goes up and pushes the exhaust through the exhaust valve.

How Does a Petrol Engine Work?

In a petrol engine the process differs slightly, as ignition occurs using a spark plug. First, the fuel and the air are mixed together in the cylinder. Then the piston goes up compressing the mixture of fuel and air, this compressed mixture of fuel and air is ignited using a spark plug. The piston then goes up pushing the exhaust through the exhaust valve.

Why Diesel Engines Are Better For Industrial Purposes

The design of a diesel engine means that it is stronger than a petrol engine and operates under higher combustion pressure as a result of the higher compression ratio used in the diesel engine.

Compression ratio is calculated by how much the engine compresses the gas in the engine’s cylinder, petrol engines have a compression rate of less than 10.1. The compression rate of a diesel engine, however, is much higher. In a petrol engine a mixture of air and fuel is compressed, whereas in a diesel engine only the air is compressed and then the fuel is injected – this allows the diesel engine to work more efficiently. Most diesel engines require a speed limiter, as the speed at which they operate is only limited by the amount of fuel injected into the cylinder. Whereas a petrol engine, has a valve that limits the amount of air entering the engine – this limits the overall speed of the petrol engine.

What Types of Diesel Engines Are There?

The two different types of diesel engines are 2 and 4 stroke – the majority of larger diesel engines operate using a 2-cycle engine whereas smaller diesel engines use a 4-stroke cycle.

Cooling Systems

Diesel engine cooling systems operate using either air, water, or oil. Water cooled engines are cooled by a closed circuit carrying liquid coolant, this absorbs the heat into either a radiator or a heat exchanger – the heat is then released into the air or water in some types of marine engines. Oil cooled engines employ a similar technique to water. Air cooled engines are generally cheaper than water and oiled cooled engines, they depend on a circulation of air over the hot parts to prevent them from overheating.
