When trying to keep any type of vehicle or industrial equipment in good working order it is important to consider clutch maintenance. Despite the fact that clutch replacement is costly - treatment of the clutch and its maintenance is often an overlooked area. It is possible to extend the life of the clutch by engaging in correct driving techniques and performing routine clutch maintenance.

Ensure Correct Operational Habits

In some cases, damage to the clutch is caused by poor operational habits, such as when the driver rests their foot on the pedal and inadvertently exerts a small amount of pressure on it when it is not being used – even a small amount of pressure will engage the clutch mechanism causing additional wear - using the clutch as a footrest can also release the bearings.

The clutch pedal should not be used when pressing on the accelerator and if the vehicle is idling in neutral, the clutch should not be engaged at all. Operators can avoid damage by placing their left foot on the floor when not changing gears, to ensure that the clutch is only used when it is necessary and leaning on the clutch pedal does not become a habit.

Reducing Heat from Internal Friction

It is important to reduce the amount of heat generated by internal friction, this is something which can be caused by slipping the clutch to gain extra momentum – this generates a lot of heat inside the clutch and can reduce its lifespan. Starting in a lower gear is a good way to combat this problem.

Air In The Hydraulic Fluid

Over time it is likely that small pockets of air may build up in the hydraulic fluid, this can affect the performance of the clutch. Some industrial vehicles are equipped with automated hydraulic fluid bleeding systems, whereas others will require manual bleeding. This involves accessing and opening the bleed screw, whilst simultaneously someone else presses the pedal to the floor – any air will be expelled from the system, the screw should then be replaced before the pedal is released.

Maintenance Tips

Regular maintenance and servicing can help to extend the life of operational equipment and machinery.

• Replace transmission fluids and filters in line with manufacturer guidelines or more frequently under greater use.
• Ensure that all fluids are clean and new to help prevent any damaging build-up.
• If the clutch displays any unordinary signs such as unusual sounds, or behaves differently to the operator in any shape or form, this should be investigated thoroughly.
