Concrete Mixers

A concrete mixer is a piece of construction equipment used for mixing concrete to the right consistency. They are ideally suited to any type of project which requires the application of concrete, regardless of its size, whether it be for a garden patio, the foundations of a large building or for another industrial purpose, the principle remains the same. The two main types of concrete mixer include the larger mixer truck, this consists of a massive rotating closed drum attached to a lorry. The other type is the portable mixer, this is typically an open rotatable drum, usually on wheels for easy manoeuvrability. It isn’t as large as the bulk mixers, allowing the mix to be easily tipped into a wheelbarrow.

How Does A Concrete Mixer Work?

A concrete mixer essentially consists of homogeneously combining an aggregate, such as building sand or gravel, with cement and water to make concrete. These components are mixed in a revolving drum, the drum may vary in size from smaller portable mixers to large industrial scale mixer trucks - regardless of the size however, the drum is always tilted at an angle to ensure that all of the concrete is well mixed and rotates constantly when in use.

Choosing The Right Mixer

Choice is invariably defined by how much concrete is needed for the job, as the basic function remains the same for all mixers. Smaller portable models, available in a number of different sizes, are more suited to domestic projects and other smaller jobs.

Getting The Mixture Right

Getting the quantities right is important when mixing concrete, an imbalance can result in the mixture being too wet or too dry and could actually ruin the end result - the ratio of the mixture must be correct in order to get the right type of concrete. The ingredients can usually be added when the mixer is running, and the angle of the drum should be tilted enough for it to be maintained at an angle without spilling the contents. Once finished the mixed concrete should be poured carefully into the mould, making sure there are no trapped air bubbles.

Maintenance

As with all onsite equipment, it is important to ensure that the mixer is well maintained. Some basic good tips for looking after the mixer include the following:

• Never overload the mixer – check its capacity limits before loading.
• Ensure that all parts of the mixer are always well oiled.
• Never leave the mixer to dry whilst there is still cement inside it.
• After use, spray the drum down and carefully use a high-pressure washer to ensure that all remaining concrete has been removed.
• Daily checks should be performed on the engine, for example on the air filter, making sure that it is clear of dust and oil.
• The belt should also be checked daily to ensure correct alignment and tension.

Safety Precautions

• Safety goggles – these are essential when operating a cement mixer in order to protect the eyes
• Gloves – cement is a massive skin irritant, as well as being difficult to remove.
• Hands or tools should never be put inside of the mixer whilst it is in use.
• When there is wet concrete around, people must always be warned as concrete is highly adhesive and difficult to remove from other surfaces, making the use of warning signs and barriers extremely important.
