During the summer months rising temperatures can put a considerable strain on construction equipment and machinery. Summer weather can produce one or more of the following:

• High levels of humidity
• Sun exposure
• Increased levels of dust during periods of hot sun and low rainfall

Wear and tear occurs at a faster rate during extreme temperatures, be they hot or cold. Maintenance is essential to make plant equipment more reliable, it also lowers overall costs as emergency repairs are extremely expensive, as well as minimising the risk of hazards.

Preventative measures that can be taken

By performing daily inspections, construction equipment can be better protected against heat damage.

Overheating

Although not always possible on a busy project, if and where possible, avoid using construction equipment during peak hours when the heat from the sun is at its most intense, from 11am until around 2pm.
