Stihl Chainsaw Parts

The majority of chainsaws users are professional arborists, carpenters, home owners or farm owners. A chainsaw is a powerful tool used to trim and cut down trees and branches – it consists of three basic elements – the power head (engine), a guide bar and a saw chain.

The power head is driven by a centrifugal clutch, the chain rotates around the guide bar at considerable speeds. When the moving chain comes into contact with wood, its metal teeth are dragged through the wood cutting into its surface. The chain itself cannot be guarded, making the chainsaw one of the most dangerous power tools. Keeping your chainsaw well-maintained will inevitably include replacing and upgrading damaged or old components from time to time, this is vital in ensuring its safety and keeping it in optimum working condition.

Stihl are the only company in the world to manufacture its own saw chains and guide bars for petrol chainsaws. By only using genuine Stihl chainsaw parts, you will maintain your chainsaw with its original standards.

The Cutting Chain

Continuous heavy use will blunt the teeth on your chainsaw’s cutting chain. Blades can be sharpened, however, after some time they will require placement. Depending on the type and depth of the wood to be cut, cutting chain requirements may vary. Full house or full compliment chains are the usually preferred types, chains are also available in various drive links, depending on your bar length and application.

The Bar

The bar length refers to the active cutting areas, from the tip of the chain to the point at which it enters the housing, bar length will vary according to purpose. Smaller lightweight bars are best suited to smaller tasks, larger bars should not be used as they are more difficult to manage and become unbalanced easily, increasing the risk of kickback. Larger pieces of wood can still be cut with a smaller chainsaw, it will take more than one pass however.

Stihl bars vary considerably in length from approximately 14” for smaller models to 36 inches for heavy weight bars. The size of your replacement bar will depend on the size and model of your chainsaw. Stihl manufacture both electric and petrol chainsaws as well as separate parts. Electric chainsaws tend to be smaller, whereas petrol chainsaws have internal combustion engines and are much more powerful – better suited for cutting down large trees and slicing through thick branches.

Clutch

The clutch is an essential component in the petrol-powered chainsaw, it should be kept well maintained and replaced when and where necessary.

Flywheel

The flywheel is a weighted wheel providing momentum to turn the chain, without it the chainsaw will not function properly.

Decompression Valve

The decompression valve releases any built-up air whilst the chainsaw is in operation, making starting the machine easier as it reduces the amount of effort used to pull the starter cord.

Throttle

The safety throttle prevents the chain being driven if the trigger is pushed accidentally.

Scabbards

Chainsaws are dangerous and should always be protected when not in use, for safe storage and transportation a scabbard will provide reliable protection against injuries from the cutting chain.

Protective Safety Clothing

Stihl offer a comprehensive range of safety clothing designed specifically for chainsaw use.

  • Eye protection
  • Head protection and face visor
  • Muffles
  • Hard hats
  • Protective clothing – Forestry overalls and cut resistant trousers
